There are three major credit reporting agencies- Trans Union, Experian, and Equifax. Sometimes one credit reporting agency will have different records for you than another so it is important for you to view them all. The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to see your credit report from all 3 bureaus.

To order your free report, visit annualcreditreport.com, or call them at1-877-322-8228. You may also request it in writing by filling out the Annual Credit Report Request Form and mail it to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. This is the only authorized source for the free annual credit report mandated by the FTC.

What if I received my free annual credit report but I want another one?

There are some other situations when are eligible for a free copy of your credit report if a lender has denied you for credit then you are entitled to a copy of your credit report as well as the reason for the denial. You could also be denied for insurance, employment or housing due to your credit, which would give you the right to a free credit report. Be sure to ask for a copy of your free credit report in any of these situations within 60 days or receiving the notice of denial or action.

Q: What information do I have to provide to get my free credit report?

You will need to provide your name, address, social security number, and date of birth. If you have lived at your current address for less than 2 years then you should also provide your previous address.

There are lots of companies that offer “free” credit reports, but consider yourself warned because they are not truly free. The “free” offer is actually a teaser for another service and it always comes with strings attached. The offer for a “free” copy of your credit report is coupled with a trial of another one of their service, usually credit monitoring. If you don’t cancel within the trial period then they will charge you the monthly fee for use.
